The picture of China's edible oil industry in the future is too beautiful for me to watch

Food is the top priority for the people, and oil is the top priority for food. The abundance of granaries and the security of the world all deeply tell us the importance of food security.

Of course, food security is a wide-ranging issue, including essential edible oils for the people. Today, China Rural Voice's "Today's Agricultural Economics" will talk about the situation of China's edible oil industry.

Every family has its own difficult to read scriptures

Domestic edible vegetable oil production is less than 40%

As the world's most populous country, the consumption base and potential of edible oil are naturally proud, but behind this proud data is the helpless sigh of the domestic edible oil industry. For most industries, 2015 was a difficult year for every household.

We know that edible oil is divided into two types: animal oil and vegetable oil. Currently, the main type is vegetable oil. In recent years, the consumption of vegetable oil has continued to grow, leading to an expanding demand gap, ultimately causing both oilseeds and edible oil to fall into an awkward situation of significantly increasing external dependence. In 2014, China imported 6.5 million tons of edible vegetable oil and 71.4 million tons of soybeans. In 2013, the production of edible vegetable oil in China was 28.79 million tons, and the production of edible vegetable oil from domestic raw materials was less than 40%.

There are always more solutions than difficulties

Preserve the Last Territory of China's Edible Vegetable Oil Industry

Over time, our voice will become increasingly weak and it will become difficult to speak effectively. How can we stand firm in international trade in the future? China's soybean industry has fallen, and how to find ways to protect the last territory of China's edible vegetable oil industry has become an urgent task in front of everyone.

At this point, we still have to ask, where is the road? How to solve such a difficult problem. The answer is of course resolute, only by doing it ourselves can we have enough food and clothing. We must make adjustments. If we are poor, we will change. If we change, we will succeed. There will always be more solutions than difficulties.

Edible vegetable oils include herbal and woody oils. One important reason for the large shortage of edible oil in our country is the serious reliance on planting herbaceous oilseeds. More than 90% of the edible oil is extracted from oilseeds such as rapeseed, peanuts, and soybeans. The yield of herbaceous oilseeds per mu is low, with weak disaster resistance and unstable yield. In order to ensure national food security, it is unlikely to allocate more arable land to develop oilseed production.

All roads lead to Rome

Wood based transformation of edible oilseeds

This road doesn't work, we have another road, after all, all the roads lead to Rome. We can vigorously develop woody oilseeds, which not only has the hope of changing the situation where China's edible vegetable oil mainly relies on imports, meeting the consumption needs of the people, but also freeing up more farmland to grow food, effectively maintaining national food security.

The woody transformation of edible oilseeds is a new path, but we are confident that our land is vast and our woody oilseed resources are abundant. Oil tea and olive trees in the south, as well as Wenguan fruit and walnuts in the north, are all tree species with high oil content. In addition, tea oil, walnut oil, peony seed oil, and long stalked almond oil all have unsaturated fatty acids exceeding 90%, which are more than 5% higher than peanut oil, soybean oil, sunflower seed oil, and corn oil, and have a significant advantage in reducing the incidence of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

The supply of raw materials is not a problem and is in line with the current concept of health and wellness, so it is natural to increase the development of woody edible oils. Moreover, the oil industry is mostly developed in mountainous areas, without competing with grain for land. It can achieve both ecological and economic benefits, which is beneficial for the people in mountainous areas to lift themselves out of poverty and become prosperous.

Being impatient and unable to eat hot tofu

Establish and improve the woody oil industry system

However, if you are impatient, you cannot eat hot tofu. Everything also needs to be considered in the long run. We know that the development of woody oilseeds is still in its early stages, with extensive management and no industrial system formed, and there is a large initial investment.

So the question is, how to establish a sound industrial system for the cultivation, processing, circulation, and consumption of woody oil crops? Recently, the General Office of the State Council issued an opinion on accelerating the development of the woody oil industry, proposing to build 800 key counties for woody oil such as Camellia oleifera, walnuts, and oil peonies by 2020, and to increase the planting area of woody oil species from the existing 120 million mu to 200 million mu. Everyone is happy that the state's regulation has only begun to take effect with its invisible hand, although there are still some concerns about the specific situation of the market's regulation. But with market orientation and policy support, big hands holding small hands, hand in hand, the development of woody edible oil industry will move forward more steadily, with diversified raw materials and healthier demand. In the future, China's edible oil industry may indeed have a beautiful scene where everyone is drunk.
